CMR Enterprise Essay Example for Free

CMR Enterprise Essay This particular case depicts the history and issues faced by a relatively small company active in the custom architectural millwork industry for the past 25 years. The new owners wanted the newly-acquired company to grow even further. The first few months seems to have been a success Marcus spent a lot of his time with employees and customers, learning the field since he was, as mentioned in the text, an outsider. However, keeping the companys integrity and image intact was a priority. However, the problems outlined in the case seems to start or at least have been worsened with what will become CMRs largest account, Blackstone Homes. Problem Identification After reviewing the text in question, three major problems stand out: 1) Customers change requests: When Blackstone Homes sell a house, it does of course! come with a pre-finished and installed kitchen, included in the price. However, if the customer wishes, he or she would visit CMRs showroom and they would build these woodwork according to their new specifications. The added cost will then be charged to the contractor, which will later add it to their bills. This takes time and lead to price increases. This is, in part, what contributed to the clash with Blackstone Homes. 2) IT solution not adapted: InfoCentral, the software implemented by Marcus, does not work out as intended and do not fit the business needs. It is not always updated as required by the employees. According to the text, it may be helpful for the commercial and financial/accounting side, but is lacking several features for its residential counterpart to be really as useful as it can be. 3) Deteriorating business relationship The business relations between the two companies started well and was fulfilling for both part. When the business expended, so did the problems. The root cause seems to be the change requests made by the homeowners. This lead to late delivery, poorly reviewed performance and then the 7% price increase. Future homeowners started considering the prices charged by CMR to be too high. We could therefore expect lower level of sales and revenues in the future. Alternatives generation While we will mostly concentrate our alternatives on the three points mentioned above, we will also include other alternatives, even if they may not be realistic or feasible in the short/medium term. 1) Review customers change requests: We obviously cannot stop change requests and modifications made by the customers. The company and its employees pride themselves by offering flexibility and higher customers satisfaction. It would be therefore self-destructive for CMR to put a term to these showrooms. Any person also deserve to have reasonable alternative options when they are buying an object, a home more than anything. However, there is a clear misunderstanding between CMR and Blackstone Homes regarding the fixed allowances for kitchen ($6,000) and the final cost of the installation. In order to solve this issue, it may be a good thing to review the billing part: Instead of having the installation costs forwarded to the contractor, all expenses over $6,000 (parts + labor) should be charged to the homeowners themselves; customers can have access to all options made available by CMR, whilst eliminating cost forwarding and the said related disagreements. 2) Software adaptation It seems clear from the text that the whole issue also come in part from InfoCentral. In order to remediate this issue, we would suggest that all account managers from CMR and employees involved with this software should meet and discuss its performance. What should be changed, what must be kept, or what should be included in order to fit everyones needs. However, for any IT solution to bring tangible additional value, it must be easy to use and should not impose additional work. It is supposed to simplify the work, not making it more complicated. 3) The right people on the right place Again, according to the text, there was a clear misunderstanding between both parties; it was even referred as a shouting contest, which is far from being a normal and healthy business relationship. The Key Account Managers (from both sides) could not agree on contract terms and conditions. It could therefore be a good thing to change points of contact and see if the situation can be resolved; a stronger relation, transparency, honesty and business awareness between the two companies might also help straighten things out. 4) Additional ideas The solution to increase profit may not be by simply increasing selling price. We would suggest CMR to run an audit on their Supply Chain, Logistics and Selling, General Administrative Expenses to see if cost reductions are possible. Could modern machinery help cut their production costs? Could they outsource some of their non-core business or reduce raw material costs by creating a joint-venture with a competitor? Chasing down inefficiencies in the production line can be even more effective than a price increase. Recommendations Using the previous points, we would suggest the three following recommendations: 1) Change the billing process: If possible, all additional costs over $6,000 should be charged to the homeowner directly. In order to make this easier for the customers, offering various financing options may be a good idea. 2) Adapt InfoCentral: Review, correct and revamp the software in order to meet real business needs. May be a good thing to check what competitors are using. 3) Organize recurrent meetings: The situation with Blackstone did not get bad in one day. It may be a good idea to set up weekly or monthly operational reviews; meetings lasting no longer than 30 minutes, where all potential issues can be discussed among stakeholders and managers. The idea is not to let such situation worsen and take the correct actions as soon as possible.

The Ethical And Social Issues Of Systems

The Ethical And Social Issues Of Systems Information system has revolutionized the way information is being transferred and the way information being passed from one person to other. They provide speed, efficiency, dependability, quality, accuracy, reliability for the information and help the organization to achieve the objective of the organization. Ethics is an important aspect in information system. The fact is that business which does ethically will remain for long in the market and ensures steady growth and great acceptance of the products or services from the customers. There are many organizations which are unethical has caused a social outcry and intervention from authorities and didnt prove favorable and created problem for the future of the company. Innovation, efficiency, effectiveness, the ability to utilize market potential optimally, recognize the signs of the times , and the art of saving costs and expenses in the right place at the right time will continue to be of greatest importance alongside all the other corporate virtues. However, an additional element will gain in significance: applied business ethics. It will become more and more a new, solid basis for competitive ability, breaching the limits of classical markets. The more affluent a society is, the more significant non material values become. Corporations that act in a visibly ethical will be preferred by informed consumers more and more. This fact will become a problem for those corporations that ignore moral aspects, and for others it will become a problem for those corporations that ignore moral aspects, and others it will be an opportunity to get the very top GOOD ETHICS ARE GOOD BUSINESS Something which directs the behavior of the company is its ethics. The worst conceivable result of high moral standards would be competitive or other tangible detriment because the special efforts to cost a company attaches to ethical consideration result in net disadvantage for it. The information system is considered as one of the major functional area of business. It is an important contributor to the operational efficiency, employee productivity, morale, customer service and satisfaction. It is a major source of information and it helps in decision making. Information system is a vital ingredient in making our products and services more competitive in the global environment or in the global market. It is a dynamic and more challenging career opportunity and it is a key component of todays networked business. It emphasizes on the quality, strategic business value and security of an organizational information system. It helps to control cost hence helps in cost reduction. It helps in the easy flow of information from one person to other or helps in passing information from the top level managers to the operational level managers When a strategy is adopted to use information technology what people think is how it can be utilized to earn extra income so that they can earn more money Managing Ethics Everybody has the responsibility to be ethical in areas wherever they are and whatever they do. According to Webster dictionary, ethics is defined as the discipline dealing with what are good and bad. Thus ethics is concerned with doing business with truth and justice and other aspects such as fair or healthy competition, meeting the expectations of the society, public relations, social responsibility, consumer autonomy and corporate behavior. When we speak about managing ethics of an organization mainly there are three theories coming to mind. They are: UTILITARIAN THEORY THEORY BASED ON RIGHTS THEORY OF JUSTICE Utilitarian theory suggests that plans and action can be evaluated by their consequences or results. The idea behind this is that plans or actions should have to yield good to large number of people. Theory based on rights tells that people have basic rights an organization should consider and should value the rights of the people and the organizations do not have the right to hinder their rights. Managers have the right to initialize ethics in the organization so that they survive for long. That really means we have to integrate ethical concepts in our daily actions. Ethics can be bring to an organization by establishing an appropriate company policy by using forming an ethics committee and by teaching and by training to the managers to be ethical in their activities. The most important thing is that they have to establish a code of conduct in the organization. FACTORS THAT RAISE ETHICAL STANDARDS The important factors thats raise are the public disclosure and increased concern of a well informed public. These factors together with government regulations and highly educated professional will bring ethics in to the organization. Necessary provisions have been made to enforce ethics in an organization. Privileges and benefits should be withdrawn and have to apply sanctions. Unethical mangers have to be held responsible and should be terminated from the organization. Another important aspect is that we should use code of ethics to solve our problems .The reason is that when a problem arises people try to solve the problem by any means. But if there is a good code of conduct for our organization we need not have to be unethical for solving the problems of the organization. Another important fact is that if people have to be ethical he should have to learn it from the schools and universities. He has to learn to be ethical in every activity or in every code of conduct from the fami ly. He has to understand the importance of ethics and should learn values from their family. Whistle Blowing is a very good way for encouraging ethical behavior in an organization. It means making aware what the unethical practices are. The managers have the responsibility to make necessary changes according to global competition, customer expectations, and the need to respond quickly according to the changes in environment. The main objective is to protect and prevent persons from doing unethical practices. In olden days there where trust, integrity, loyalty, caring and keeping promises were there in an organization and focused on maintaining the culture of the organization with trust, but now a days now people will do anything as there only motive is profit generation. In that case techniques such whistle blowing helps to enforce environmental laws and works for accountability of business. TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS IN ETHICS Technology has got many advantages as well as disadvantages. The managers are operating in a complex environment. Based on the environment the management takes necessary decisions. Thus organizations are concentrated on establishing an environment which is favorable to business and the society. Every organization has some responsibility towards the individuals and the society. So now a days what corporate are focusing to establish social responsiveness relating to corporate operations and policies to the social environment in ways that are beneficial to the company and the society. Ethics thus deals what is good as well as with moral duty and obligations. Technology has helped to simplify the operation, to achieve economies of scale and to establish value for the product manufactured. It has helped to reduce the cost of production hence made the organization to receive huge profits for the products manufactured. In case of increased profits what an organization can do is to work for the development of the society, providing more employment opportunities, providing products which give value to the customers, and preventing from emission of wastages to the nature thereby preventing from environmental problems. ETHICAL ASPECTS OF INFORMATION SYSTEM The spread of information has been revolutionized by new computer technology by the way they gather information, manipulate and communicate data. The use of information system with high speed and efficiency is obtained by the use of local and global networks and software, hardware, people and resources has provided new responsibilities to the people who use information system. It is a source of power. Thus when we speak about the ethics of information system we should say that it has to involve social and political relationships. The most important thing is how information has been used such as whether it has been used for good or bad. A certain code of conduct followed in the organization will explains how information system has been used ethically. It helps to bridge the gap between need of the organization and the rights of every one. A network refers to one system which can share information with other system. It is referred as a reliable source of sharing information .The networ ks participants have recognized the value of information system and has combined humanity. ORGANISATIONAL ISSUES IN INFORMATION SYSTEM The organizations and corporate were rocked by the accounting scandals at Enron, Tyco and WorldCom. This scandal understands the lack of ethical content among the individuals. The technology has been misused by the people who are well aware of the technology. Computer virus affect the computer and people who are well aware of technology spread virus which harm peoples computer and they themselves produces the antivirus softwares to prevent computers from virus. Thus they make huge profit out of this. It is truly unethical. Apart from this there are hackers who r intended to destroy the data and softwares and can disturb computer services. Phishing has been done by people who are well aware of technology. What they do is they acquire sensitive information such as password, credit card details etc. It is done through email or messaging and offer directs to people to unsecured sites. Criminals usually acquire informations of the financial data and used to steal money. Some of the other practices have made the system very slow computer process and make pop ups taking over..Due to this reason pirated versions of software are available for every product. People are cheated by selling the pirated version and they will have to face trouble in future and cause serious issues to the computer when it is being caught by the company. This always happens because people always focus on low cost rather than quality of the product. Thus the victim is subjected to loss of funds. The issue related to personal or organizational ethics, privacy, information security, and protection has been made understand by technology by the managers. Spyware, adware, and phishing attempts have grown in sophistication and prominence. This has to be seriously identified and should be prevented so as to have a good code of conduct. LEGAL ISSUES IN INFORMATION SYSTEM The Legal Issues in Information Technology is designed for technologists and managers responsible for creating and implementing policies for protecting IT resources within private corporations or government agencies. Surveys are conducted for understanding the leading privacy, criminal, intellectual property and regulatory laws that establish liability and boundaries related to enterprise information systems. It focuses on the practical implications of these laws and the issues that should be covered in an enterprise security policy. People working in the organization are asked to spot issues and suggest standard practices to reduce risk. It ensures preliminary look at the legal issues and the surrounding and activate cyber defenses. The information system which is used the individuals have to thus use the originals to protect themselves from trouble in future. It is a serious problem if we use unauthorized versions or pirated versions of software and all. The firewalls or the securi ty system wont be effective in such systems so these system can be affected seriously by hackers, spammers etc. So to get maximum protection and safety we should use only originals so that we can claim for damages if anything happened in future. SOCIAL ISSUES IN FORMATION SYTEM Information system has lot of social issues same as any other issues. The unethical behavior of people creates several social problems .It has a great impact on the culture. Spreading of vulgar activities have increases in largely and people are more prone to sex and other activities like video chats. Several cheating cases have been reported Multiethnic issues in organizations refers to one of the most often discussed underpinnings in accumulation systems search throughout the term of the IS business. Cultural issues are those which are most allied with the hominine bourgeois in damage of collection systems, use and utilization of message systems and technologies. The conceptualization of particularized sociable issues and their related constructs, planned designs and infrastructures, falsifiable determination of cultural models, and circumstance studies illustrating socializing success and failures would be important. Whatsoever key topics may allow: (1) Ethics (2) Culture (3) Relationships (4) Human interaction (5) Security (6) Design. Whatever of the research topics that would fit within this minitrack comprise: 1. Ethical issues: electronic monitoring of employees, data utilitization, and morality in entropy systems survival; 2. Cultural issues: education of nascent technologies, developing trust, commonwealth asymmetry, insurance feat, and multiethnic environments; 3. Human interaction issues: recruitment and retainment of foul department, motive, societal presence, and organizational champions of info systems; 4. Relationship issues: development partnerships, realistic teams, set cohesiveness, cooperation, unit facilitation, networking, and buyer-supplier linkages; 5. Security issues: expend of aggregation, virus/worm commencement, Intranet assail, collection security, dupery with systems use, and standards and regulations. CONCLUSION Information Technology has greater importance in an organization. It is necessary for an organization to achieve competitive advantage and to achieve the goals of the organization. The same technology can be used to cheat people also. It all depends on the users of information technology. The management has the sole responsibility to check how the information technology has been utilized by the individuals so that it yields good result for the organization. The management has to ensure that the resources are utilized for doing ethical activities. They have to ensure that no fraudulent activities have been done with the information technology. For that the organization or company should have some values and principles. The company should follow some code of ethics so that the employees are aware of the company policies so that it yields good name to the company also a good reputation among general public. Also the company or organization have to ensure that the company is working as p er the rules and regulations of the government and it activities are based on the laws and regulations enforced by the local jurisdiction. Therefore it is important to have a very good knowledge of ethics and the corporate has some responsibility towards the society. Every individual who uses information system should have to understand the importance of ethics and should inculcate a good code of ethical conduct in all his activities. Some of the codes of conduct which an organization or an individual has to do are the following:- Contribute to society and Human well being Avoid Harm to others Be Honest and trust worthy Be fare and take action not to discriminate Honor property rights including copyrights and patents Give proper credit for intellectual property Respect privacy of others Honor confidentially Only if there is a good ethical theory we can take a good others ethical decision. Treating others with respect is very important and vital for every individual. As per saying give respect and take respect. Today we live in an information society and in order to gain the greatest advantages in the modern market place, we need to be able to access the available information effectively. Every technological innovation, from paper through to the modern computer, has broadened the spectrum of learning necessary to attain peak literacy levels. In our current information society, the minimum requirements for true literacy are: intellectual skills; technology and access. Intellectual skills are the result of education, and include reading, writing and comprehension skills as well as the ability to reason, calculate and solve complex problems through the application of analytical thought processes. Information is of no use if one has not the intellectual skills to unlock its potential. Only thing is that everything has to be used ethically should be capable of developing the society.

The Recurring Theme of Death in the Poetry of Philip Larkin. Essay

The Recurring Theme of Death in the Poetry of Philip Larkin. In reading the poetry of Philip Larkin for the first time, one is struck by the characteristically glum atmosphere that pervades most of his poems. The vast majority of his verse is devoted to what is generally taken to be negative aspects of life, such as loneliness and dejection, disappointments, loss, and the terrifying prospect of impending death. Evidently, there are uplifting and humorous sides to his work as well, but for certain reasons Larkin is invariably identified with a downhearted, pessimistic temper and tone of voice, conveying a constant sense of failure and of disappointment that underlies all the more specific emotions and reflections of individual poems. Frequently, Larkin is just sad, and one is amazed then at the wide range of things and events, from money ('Money': 'I listen to money singing It is intensely sad.' (198)), to a delayed plane ('Autobiography at an Air-Station', where the person obviously had hoped to leave before sunset, but cannot, because his machine is several hours delayed. When he says: 'I set So much on this Assumption. Now it's failed' (78), this response would appear a little oversensitive, did not the title indicate that something more is being dealt with here than just an afternoon at the airport), that can depress him. Larkin can be violently energetic as well, and so deep is his embitterment at times that he believes himself to be maliciously tricked out of something he had originally been entitled to - although he is very vague about who or what it was that cheated him, or the nature of his initial hopes. An illustrative case in point is the title of his second substantial volume of verse, ... ...is no sense of human contact and interaction, or want of it. For Larkin, a sense of loss seems to be inevitable as life goes on, and his fatalistic - and somewhat bewildering - contention is that the course of one's life is essentially independent of one's actions. However, Larkin does not explicitly point the finger at one person, group or institution, although he comments on parents, society and love as being flawed in other poems. Larkin's message of his poetry, coupled with the recurring theme of death, is that things just happen to be the way they are, without anyone particularly wanting them to be so - a conclusion that furthermore is very much in line with Larkin's fatalistic frame of mind. Emotional Intelligence and Self Management and their Influence on Atti

The purpose of this study is to gauge the affect of ones emotional intelligence, A deï ¬ ciency in emotional intelligence can mean a lack of success and the existence of emotional problems, (Chopra & Kanji, 2010) and ability to self motivate (the ability to motivate oneself, to find a reason and the necessary strength to do something, without the need of being influenced to do so by another person) ("Define:Self motivation - Google Search," n.d.) with self estimation of ones preparedness for life situations. It is necessary to have accurate knowledge about the world of work to make good academic and career decisions. (Nauta, n.d.). However, college students often do not have accurate knowledge of careers in their discipline. Psychology students have quite distorted perceptions of the activities conducted by clinical psychologists, counselors, and psychiatrists. (Nauta, n.d.)Upper level undergraduates had poor understanding of applied psychology. (Ellis & Cantrell, 1994) Throughout the literature, it is generally agreed that emotional intelligence is vital for personal development, survival, personal life success and excellence. It is now widely known that emotions interact with thoughts and vice versa. Therefore, there is a need for a framework to assess the phenomenon of emotional intelligence related to any individual. (Chopra & Kanji, 2010) In a study looking at the relationship between learning styles, emotional social intelligence, and academic success of undergraduate nursing students (Suliman, 2010), the findings suggested that either no actual relationship exists or that emotional intelligence may be confounded with factors such as professional and cultural values. Jacksonian Democracy Essays -- essays research papers

Jacksonian Democracy   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Jacksonian (Democracy, Society, etc.) is a term used to describe reform during the time of Andrew Jackson’s Presidency. Specifically Jacksonian Democracy refers to â€Å"the general extension of democracy that characterized U.S. politics from 1824 to 1828.† Jacksonian Democracy and its support came primarily from the lower classes as a rebellion of sorts apposing the aristocracy. Even though it stressed equality, it was pro-slavery and anti-Indian (not unlike Andrew Jackson). Also there was change in both the political parties and the social reforms. Jackson was seen as a westerner (even though he was from Tennessee) and a president of the common man. This we can see when he married women out of the lower classes and the upper class was astonished. Also, Jackson had opened the white house to everyone on his inauguration day.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  During his time in office Political parties changed their names and were affirmed. Earlier when the term party was looked upon with similar meaning as faction, it represented a sort of selfishness and contention over unanimity that wasn’t needed in the government. The Democrats and the Whigs were the new names of the parties. The Whigs grew from the Republican Party and the Democrats form the Anti-Federalists. What brought this change were economic booms and downturns that had characterized the 19th century economy. Also Missouri Compromise (when Missouri’s proposed constitution admitted for slavery and to balance the states Maine was admitted as a free state) had a hand in bringing about the parties when a group of politicians (of whom Martin Van Buren was apart of) that were organized in a coalition for states rights and limited government that would be later supported by Andrew Jackson; also they help support Jackson for the presidency of 1828, they were known as the Democrats. Parties were also essential because they gave the Common man (which Jackson was all about) the power to compete (sort of) with the wealth, education, and social connections of the traditional leaders (fun?). The Whigs stood for Government controlled commercial development that incorporated what was called the American System, and wanted a high tariff that would benefit the North and its factories rather than the European competition, which meant more funds for the national governme... ... points in social reform from Jacksonian Democracy was abolition. The logic was that social reform also applied to slavery and almost more than any other institution. The reasoning behind this was that slaves resisted their own enslavement. Slavery was opposed in the 18th century by Quakers and few other whites, even though the American Revolution with its rhetoric about equal and universal rights called slavery into serious question. The Northern States abolished it and the Southern slave owners (upper south mind you) thought about liberating slaves. However it wasn’t until the 1830s that a number of middle class Norteà ±os (northerners) began to demand immediate emancipation of slaves for their incorporation as equals in the Republic. Just as other social reforms had taken root with mostly radical Norteà ±o Whigs, abolitionism soon found its way to them. This was a basis for the middle class revivals of the 1820s and 1830s. In closing this is what Jacksonian democracy incorporated; pretty much any reform that happened within the country during Andrew Jackson’s presidency. Multinational Corporations

Globalization The liberal economic theory Is based on the fact that not all state's territories include the blessing of various natural resources. Therefore, state economies over the years have established several laws that make economic global trade a rather fair transaction. In its core trading was created to facilitate the gaining of products for territories in which producing a specific good might be limited due to their natural resources from those with comparative or absolute advantage.Economic liberalizes believe that governments should not interfere in the markets, because international elate Is maximized when states practice comparative advantage and specialize in certain products. It makes more sense for a country with easier and cheaper ways to produce a specific product do so in abundance and share it through global trade with the world, rather than it be extremely difficult and costly for a single state to do it alone.Through foreign direct investment, multinational corp orations are able to invest in other countries by establishing their own facilities in foreign territories. This is the base of globalization. Through FED and Mans companies are locating closer to customers and Introducing themselves In the same area as competitors, meanwhile they hire local manufacturers and employees to assist the production of their product. By doing so, they not only fuel the international economy by creating a larger amount of production for trade, but they also are creating Jobs for people where they are most needed. They usually establish foreign facilities and plants in countries where wage is extremely cheap- indicating that these countries are probably home to extremely poor human beings, who would have trouble finding a Job In the first place. Yet they also search to Invest In states that have attractive resources. FED Is good for developing countries because they make their economies stronger. By paying taxes and training personnel, they enrich their host territories economy and development.Economic liberalizes believe that Mans can serve as a peace keeping potential during trying times between two countries. That interdependence globally would cause powers to be more understanding and hesitant before creating a war. However stating that underdeveloped nations cannot Lully control the Mans because of lack of proper enforcement of human right laws, there is a chance that the workers may be exploited, but through safety and health standards, this situation is usually controlled. I strongly believe that developing states should allow Mans to house facilities in their territories. It's clear that for development, you must establish a strong economy, and FED and Mans without a doubt assist lesser-developed countries in reaching development. They create Jobs for those who are uneducated and therefore disqualified from many Job technological advancement of local companies. I do, however, support that specific tariffs and laws should be set against the Mans goods being sold in that state's market, because local producers could not stand a chance next to mass productions. Also, the dangers of human rights being violated are possible when establishing an NC in a state with an unrecognized government and must be highly investigated for proper activity. In regards to those issues I believe that as long as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GAIT) enforce and practice their trade principals the global trade market will be a safe place. The prevarication and liberalizing of trade and foreign direct investment are the best way to go about developing a state. Big Brothers, Big Sisters Essay

Big Brothers, Big Sisters is a prevention program, which enhances the socialization of children through paying attention to their psychological and physical development and increasing their feeling of â€Å"being included† into community and school environment. Due to the fact that the project is mostly directed to planning interesting leisure and education-related activities for minors, it can be interpreted as prevention program, as it creates a friendly and harmonious environment which encourages and reinforces the child’s self-esteem through establishing a symmetric communication between the minor and adult and teaching important social skills. As for me, I believe that the program is effective, as it deals mostly with three important predictors of deviance and crime – absence of developing and diversified pastime, lack of engagement with community activities and academic failure (and the consequent loss of interest in education) in schoolchildren. In addition, the relevant study, provided by the website, demonstrates the following results: â€Å"Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters were: – 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs; – 27% less likely to begin using alcohol; – 52% less likely to skip school; – 37% less likely to skip a class; – more confident of their performance in schoolwork; – one-third less likely to hit someone† (at http://www. bigbrooc. org/html/our_impact. html, 2007). There are three major curriculums, designed within the program. First of all, there is a set of community-based activities, which take place once a month. The community volunteers encourage the participants to do sports, play intellectual games, have meals together or simply take walks in the park. Group-based mentoring program includes monthly meeting of Big and Little Brothers and Sisters and learning new and unusual types of sports, associated with team playing. For instance, the participants do kayaking, play miniature golf or team bowling. All these sports are aimed at improving the children’s concentration, dexterity, ability to plan and make joint decision within the team; as one knows from developmental psychology, the progress of physical skills is particularly sensitive to influences at teen age, when the person is actively growing. The complex of school-based activities comprises weekly sessions, during which the minors are assisted in their home assignments. The major advantage of this program, which actually can cause in the jealousy of the similar agencies, is its image of partnership between adults and children, who receive not mentors, but friends, whose role models are more likely to be learned by minors. The typical agencies of this profile (working in the directions of prevention and diversion) more willingly involve competent specialists (in a limited number) than volunteers, so the underage target audience not always receives socialization experience and learn social skills during workshops and training. In addition, the Big Brothers Big Sisters project manages to maintain its focus on the underage audience in all points of its curriculum and stimulates the natural and healthy socialization in minors (through communication and team activities), instead of creating artificial conditions (like those in workshops and purposeful social skills training). The goals of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters project to great extent coincide with the orientation of the whole juvenile justice system. The major priority of the system is prevention of juvenile crimes and recidivism, but this goal is traditionally accomplished through enlightenment and education in the spheres of crime and punishment, drug addiction and alcohol use. The efforts of the program, on the other hand, are directed to improving the minors’ physical and psychological health and helping them establish friendly contact with the environment. This model is often neglected by the juvenile justice system, so it would be beneficial to introduce the program under the management of the network of government institutions, responsible for delinquency prevention, as the idea of healthy and natural socialization is likely to become a new direction in the functioning of the juvenile justice system and the unity of accountability will provide courts will more comprehensive information about the children. In addition, the program will also demonstrate success in the field of diversion. Finally, the program will correct the official and formalized image of the juvenile justice system and break the stereotype of the â€Å"punishing institution†. The major strength of the program is its positivist approach to prevention, which includes strengthening the minors’ social and psychological potential rather than intimidating schoolchildren about the adversities, associated with delinquency and illicit drug use. The project embraces community work, group work and school work, so that the major environments, in which the children operate, are influenced and to some extent altered. The ultimate goal in this sense is the development of the sense of inclusion into all these environments in the participants. On the other hand, the program lacks one important components, which is family-based work. As the website suggests, the underage participants originate from the households, where domestic violence and alcohol use are practiced. With respect to the fact that behavior models, learned in the family, are to certain degree determinative in teenagers’ behavior, it would also be useful to establish a contact between the families and the community and arrange activities, which imply the creation of a large team, consisting of children, their parents and the Bigs. Another weakness is the lack of basic psychological education for children, as at the certain stage of their development they need theoretical knowledge of building relationships and understanding others, so the Big Brothers, Big Sisters can introduce monthly discussions of the achievements and difficulties, experienced by the participants in their relationships with coevals and adults.
